Classical Tradition And The Classical Era - 1139 Words
The classical tradition in the medieval times has an articulate work of art should stand by itself without the need of interpretation. As one literally scholar would state, the classical era states that interpretation is ambiguous, and ââ¬Å"does not always prevailâ⬠. Yet, now in our society, artââ¬â¢s interpretation can be one or all: a parody, an abstract, a pastiche, or non-art. Pain and suffering constituted things with which for him to identify. His own family had made a grueling transition from the war and turmoil ravaged areas of Prussia (now Czech) Although many of his works have become instantly recognizeable, famous in their own right, the distinct themes of the classical traditionââ¬â¢s work have no direct meaning. The classicalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As Gericault referenced a tragic, contemporary event in ââ¬ËThe Raft of Medusaââ¬â¢ from 1819, The classical tradition referenced events at the very time they occurred (see ââ¬Å"127 Die in Jetâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Tunafish Disasterâ⬠) . For him, the borderline between simulated time and actual time was blurry and often nonexistent. Whether events, people and things were ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ or not became debatable However flip and casual his observations may have been, their credence (in this light) cannot be denied. The act of parody had very nearly become his denouemont, an all too-shocking reality, as well as History. As such, The classical tradition had left his mark for the ages. The term, under this tradition became the rise of the Avant-Garde is seen widely used in the field of visual art and literature. The term derives from the military term, advanced guard or vanguard and it reflects this movementââ¬â¢s role in art history as well. By nature, this movement was meant to be controversial- desiring to challenge the traditional art and the society as a whole. In the realm of the arts world, works of the Avant-Garde carried characteristics which represented pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm as well as tearing down the status quo. Began in 1850 in France, this movement led many artists to initiate works that are experimental, innovative and unconventional. The three essential features of an

Gillian Clarkes Catrin tackles one of the well-considered themes in feminist writing - the mother-daughter relationship. CATRIN ====== Gillian Clarkes Catrin tackles one of the well-considered themes in feminist writing - the mother-daughter relationship. The aspect of the relationship that Clarke explores here is the bond (rope) that ties them together and from which they try to free themselves from the very beginning, even before birth. Freeing yourself as an individual within a relationship must result in conflict on both sides, which is what the mother and daughter in Catrin are experiencing now. The question we ask ourselves here is, when does the struggle begin? Notice how the speaker uses monosyllables toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The real or literal meaning of the metaphor is that each participant in the confrontation wanted her own way. Their actions were shouting. A tank reminds us of a fish tank, and of the idea that it contains everything to do with its occupants. In the speakers case, the tank contains and holds in complete focus the confrontation, which the participants neither won nor lost. yet we find that it is only another manifestation of the same confrontation, this battle of wills, the need for autonomy. The first stanza is longer because it deals with the defining experience of the two characters lives. * taking/Turn at the traffic lights (lines 4-5) emphasises the t sound providing the rhythmic effect of cars going one by one. But I think we can also see the rhythmic and regular moment of the speakers labour in the phrase. * first/Fierce (lines 6-7) uses the initial f sound in words whose monosyllabic effects suggest the pushing movements of birth. * Red rope suggests the blood connection between the speaker and the child. Later it becomes an old rope, but the red colour reminds us that the suggestion of the umbilicus remains in the image of the rope. * Lines 13-14 contain the w sound in walls, words, with and wild, all suggestive of the intensity and struggle of the birth experience. * Lines 15-16 use the s sound in

Project Management Areas Managing Business Projects
Question: Discuss about the Project Management Areas for Managing Business Projects. Answer: Part 1 Introduction In this report, the statement, With respect to managing projects, the Project Manager is constantly required to monitor progress, gather information and problem-solve to make decisions is being evaluated with respect to two key disciplines of project management including Human Resource Management and Risk Management. An argument would be made on whether the activities of project manager must be based on the creation of value for the project. Project Management Definition As per PMBOK guide, project management process is carried out in five process groups including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closing(Duncan, 1996). Each of these process groups has defined core as well as facilitating processes as shown in the table below: Process Group Core Processes Facilitating Processes Initiation Initiation Planning Scope planning, scope defining, Activity definition, resource planning, activity sequencing, activity duration and cost estimation, schedule development, cost budgeting and plan development Quality plan, communication plan, risk management plan, human resource management plan, procurement plan, solicitation plan Executing Scope plan execution, scope verification Quality assurance, team development, information distribution, solicitation, source selection Monitoring and Control Change control, performance reporting Quality control, risk response control, scope control, schedule control, cost control(Boudreau, 1996) Project Closure Administrative closure, Contract closure Explanation Each of the key process groups of PMBOK guide has defined core as well as facilitating processes as shown in the table below: Process Group Core Processes Facilitating Processes Initiation Initiation Planning Scope planning, scope defining, Activity definition, resource planning, activity sequencing, activity duration and cost estimation, schedule development, cost budgeting and plan development Quality plan, communication plan, risk management plan, human resource management plan, procurement plan, solicitation plan Executing Scope plan execution, scope verification Quality assurance, team development, information distribution, solicitation, source selection Monitoring and Control Change control, performance reporting Quality control, risk response control, scope control, schedule control, cost control(NCKU, 2008) Project Closure Administrative closure, Contract closure Framework The project management framework defined in the PMBOK divides project activities into processes that are grouped into five categories based on the stage of the project including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control and project closure. All the processes involved in the project management are listed into 10 knowledge areas of project management including project integration, scope management, time management, quality management, HR management, communication management, risk management and procurement management. As this report would be created considering two of these knowledge areas, this section would cover framework details of only those two areas that include Human Resource Management and Risk Management(Atkinson, 1999). Human Resource Management: This area involves development of a human resource plan which is done in the planning stage and execution of the same by acquiring project team, developing the team, and managing the same(Belout Gauvreau, 2004). Risk management: This area involves development of a Risk Management plan which is done in the planning stage and execution of the same which involves identification of risks, qualitative risk analysis, quantitative risk analysis, and risk response planning. Risk monitoring and control activities are also carried out in this discipline in the fourth stage of project management(U.S. Department of the Interior , 2012). Part 2 In this part, a few cases of large projects are taken as a base for understanding the importance and value creation in terms of human resource management and risk management. Human Resource Management Human resource management is essential on a project as the project performance largely depends on the people working for it. Projects can survive only when they have clarity of vision, strong work culture, and skilled workforce. Thus, reaching project goals require focus on human factors(Boudreau, 1996). It is an important part of any project management and it involves determination of competency and skill requirements of projects, assessment of potential candidates based on the same, selection and recruitment of right resources and their management. For any organization to be able to do that, the first step is to hire an efficient project manager who would the take care of the plan for the acquisition and use of other resources(Mishra, 2007). Inefficient HRM in Sydney Opera House Sydney opera house was the first construction project that used Computer Aided Design. The project was in major limelight for its unique design but from project management point of view, it is largely considered as a failure due to two main reasons. First, the project exceeded its original budget by a large amount. While the initial budget allocated was only AUS $1 million, the actual project cost $102 million. The construction work was also much delayed as the final design of the project was completed 4 years after the construction had already started. In the Sydney Opera House Project, there was no project manager involved but the designer Utzon himself was expected to take coordinate all activities. However, Utzon did not have any practical experience of such large construction projects because of which designs and implementation methods kept on changing and many a times, already build structures were demolished and rebuilt. The original design of roof which had made Utzon won the competition was under major controversy as it was later found not feasible and thus, Utzon revised its design. If the project had an experienced project manager handling coordination and execution activities, Utzon did not have to divert from his design work(Sanchez, et al., 2015). Moreover, there was no human resource management plan made but management of the construction project team was left to Utzon who was a good at aesthetics of designs but was not an adept manager. He would not listen to the concerns and suggestions of engineers but was only concerned about the aesthetics of the roof. This resulted into conflicts and delays. Because of the delays, people started to leave the project which resulted into high turnover(Ballesty, 2005). Effective HRM in DLC In the infrastructure construction project of Dubai Logistics City (DLC), management knew well in advance that capacity would be a constraint for such a large project to handle as contractors, skilled engineers, logistics and project management professionals were not available sufficiently with the government. However, with proper human resource planning, the management of the project took a different approach to human resource and took some professionals from the private sector. While taking people from private sector, they also realized that they had to do some modifications in contract arrangements to attract them as well as keep the workforce satisfied and motivated. Thus, strategies were adopted to curb quality issues and overcome constraints of supply chain. Some of these strategies included advanced payment structure and the promise of largest price that were adopted over the traditional mode of payment after work and fixed contract pricing(Sen, et al., 2007). Risk Management The process of risk management begins at the time of project planning such that probable risks are identified and response plan is created to manage them at the time of occurrence. If risks are not evaluated in advance then it becomes difficult to respond to them fast when they actually occur. Moreover, certain risks are likely to affect project to a major extent. Such was the case with the opera house. The risk of using a design that was made out of lack of practical experiences of construction project could have risked instability and lack of construction feasibility which was not evaluated before the project was planned. This resulted into selection of a design that was good as per looks but was not feasible for construction. Lack of Risk Management in Opera House The Opera House project had many risks and uncertainties that affected its performance but the same were not forecasted at the time of planning. From the starting of the project itself when a design competition was conducted to call designs for the construction of opera house, no clear evaluation was done on the past experience of the designers with construction projects. Various risks and uncertainties that were not accounted for in planning but cause major impacts on the project included: Impractical design: The design made by Utzon, the chosen designer was not practical for construction because of which he had to make major changes in the design and the final design was only completed after 4 years of the start of the construction work. Conflict due to change in Stakeholder expectations: The expectation of Australian government from the project was not made clear at the start nor was any consideration made for risk of inability to meet the expectations. The original design was created considering two theatres but later government officials demanded 4 theatres. Cost Conflicts: Initially, the government gave a go ahead for no limits on funding but at the later stages of the project, when the expenses exceed beyond expectations, limits were put on funding which lead to frustration and discouragement in the project team. The initial estimates of project cost were highly superficial that did not work with the project activities and thus, there was a need of more funding. By the time, government realized this and increased the funding in 1966; Utzon had already left the project. Loss of Human Resource: Utzon left the project in the middle of construction because of discouragement from lack of funding. New designer was to be hired and as Utzon took away his ideas as well, a new design was to be developed by the new designer. This rework escalated the cost to a large extent and the project ended up spending AUS $102 million by the end of the project. Risk Management in Sydney Cross City Tunnel Project Sydney Cross City Tunnel Project was an outcome of a Public Private Partnership which needed division of responsibilities as well as risks between the two entities . However, all the risks were offloaded to the private player while government agency only provided initial funds required for project. Private organization was unable to manage the risks well. It faltered specifically in the management of financial risks(GAMUT, 2014). The project reflects the importance of not only recognizing the risks but also in recognizing appropriate people or entities who should take the responsibility of managing the risks. Moreover, the project lacked a systematic risk management methodology that could have been agreed upon mutually such risk response plans could have been identified and appropriate risk policies could have been set. It was only after all the funds were exhausted and the project was making losses that the lacuna was realized and the government came up with a new arrangement in which risks were properly planned and shared between the two entities(Chan, et al., 2008). Part 3 Human Resource Management Use of human resource management strategies and tools defined in the project management methodology can add value to the project in following ways: Responsibility assignment matrix ensures that every work package is properly assigned to qualified team member which avoids role related conflicts(NCKU, 2008). RACI matrix can be used to identify if a person is given responsibility but lack accountability which can cause conflicts of interest. If this was used in the Opera House project, a realization could have made that Utzon who was given responsibility of managing project was actually not accountable for it and thus, could decide to leave the project exercising his freedom. On the other side engineers were given responsibility to take care of technicalities of the project but were not given authority to take decisions such that only Utzon decided what was to be done which again resulted into people conflicts and loss of interest in engineers. Human resource plan also takes care of the competencies of people such that they are hired on the job only when they have the right skills for managing a part of the project. In case of the Opera house project, Utzon was expected to manage people which required project management skills that were not present in him. A human resource plan helps management clearly identify staff requirements, cost estimations for resources, when resources are needed, required skills, training requirements and equipments required by staff. This clear identification of resource requirements can help resolve resource conflicts as well as ensure that they posses right skills and competencies to be able to complete the project with proficiency(Mishra, 2007). Risk Management A risk management planning can add value to the project as it is a proactive process for managing risks such that risks that have not occurred but can be expected are analyzed in advance and a plan is developed for responding to them as they occur. Risk management process also help managers identify the likelihood of each risk and the impacts they can cause on the project such that appropriate control strategy or response strategy can be developed. For instance, if there are risks found that can create major impacts on the project performance but if identified earlier, they can actually be avoided from happening; an appropriate measure would be taken to already eliminate the risk even before the same occurs. For instance, in the case of opera house project, if a risk of presenting a design which was not practical was realized at the start of the project, a requirement of having an experience with large scale construction project could have been added in the competition which could have resulted into applications of only those designers who also know the practical challenges of construction such that the design presented was sustainable. In the same way, if the risk of Utzon leaving the project in between was identified earlier, company would have already taken the designs and other work done by Utzon in their custody such that even if he left the project, the same designs could have been used by the new designer and new design would not have to be created. This way, a huge loss to the organization could have been prevented that was causes because of redesigning and reconstruction of the project. Conclusions Recommendations This report was prepared to understand how project management practices can add value to projects. For this, a case of Sydney Opera house project was taken which was explored against the practiced of human resource management and risk management used. The base of Project Management Body of Knowledge was taken for analysing the case. The report presented the arguments on the statement, With respect to managing projects, the Project Manager is constantly required to monitor progress, gather information and problem-solve to make decisions The report identified ways human resource management and risk management added value to projects. Based on this study certain recommendations can be made: Human resource management should include clear identification of roles, responsibilities, skills, competencies, and training requirements. A person made responsible for an activity must also be given required authority to be able to take decisions A person made responsible for something must also have an accountability for the same to be able to expect sincerity from the person All possible risks on the project must be identified and those that can be avoided must be avoided. A contingency and risk response plan is required if the project has to run smooth and losses are to be avoided. References Changefirst Limited, 2009. Pablo Picassos Bequest Of Gertrude Essays - Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso's Bequest Of Gertrude Pablo Picasso was a very famous artist in his time. I have always found his work very interesting and unique. He has a style all his own and, I believe that this was what made him so famous and at the same time controversial. The painting I have chosen is called Gertrude. Pablo Picasso was born in Spain to Jose Ruiz and Maria Picasso. He later adopted his mothers more distinguished maiden name Picasso. Picasso was a child prodigy who was recognized as such by his art-teacher father who ably led him along. Picasso was taught for a few years and after he attended the Academy of fine art in Curna Spain where his father taught. Picassos early drawings such as, Study of A Torso, After A Plaster Cast (1894-1895 Musee Picasso, Paris, France) demonstrates the high level of technical proficiency he had accomplished by the age of 14 years old. (Encarta 2000) Picassos artwork is classified as modern art witch started in the early 1880s to the mid 1970s. In 1885 his family moved to Barcelona, Spain after his father obtained a teaching post at that citys academy of fine Arts. Picasso was admitted to advanced classes in the academy after he completed in a single day the entrance examination that applicants were traditionally given a month to complete. In 1897 Picasso left Barcelona to further his study at the San Fernando academy in Madrid witch was located in the Spanish capital. His academic studies did not last long in Madrid. He was unhappy with the training he was receiving and he left and returned back to his home in Barcelona Spain. Picasso visited Paris some time around the early 1900s. After that visit he decided that he would move back and fourth between Spain and Paris. He did this until 1904 when he finally settled down in the French capital. At this time Picasso started to explore and experiment with different art styles that were modern. This portion of his life is called the blue period. This was because of the blue tones Picassos paintings had. During the year of 1905 to 1906 a radical change took place in Picassos style of painting once again. His choice of colors and mood were evident in this period of his life. He used subtle pinks and grays that were often highlighted by brighter tones. This was tone as his rose period. (Rodenbeck, Compton's, Joseph) Along with her brother Leo, Gertrude Stein was among the first Americans to respond with enthusiasm to the artistic revolution in Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. The weekly salons she held in her Paris apartment became a magnet for European and American artists and writers alike, and her support of Matisse, Braque, Girls, and Picasso was evident in her many acquisitions of their work. For Picasso, this early patronage and friendship was of major importance. Picasso's portrait of the expatriate writer was begun in 1905, at the end of his Harlequin period and before he took up Cubism. Stein is shown seated in a large armchair, wearing her favorite brown velvet coat and skirt. Her impressive demeanor and massive body are aptly suggested by the monumental depiction. In her book The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1932), Stein described the making of this picture: Picasso had never had anybody pose for him since he was sixteen years old. He was then twenty-four and G ertrude had never thought of having her portrait painted, and they do not know either of them how it came about. In any case, it did, and she posed for this portrait ninety times. There was a large broken armchair where Gertrude Stein posed. There was also a couch where everybody sat and slept. There was a little kitchen chair where Picasso sat to paint. There was a large easel and there were many canvases. She took her pose, Picasso sat very tight in his chair and very close to his canvas and on a very small palette, which was of a brown gray color, mixed some more brown gray and the painting began, and he created the rich earth tones that we see in the

Gordon Wood American Revolution free essay sample
The American Revolution was as radical as any revolution in modern history, for it replaced monarchical authority with representative government and created a society that was far more democratic than even the founding fathers had anticipated. These new ways of thinking are why Gordon Wood strongly believes that the American Revolution was the most radical and far-reaching event in American history. Before the revolution even began radical thoughts and ideas about things swept through the colonies. Through the Enlightenment and Great Awakening new ways of thinking based on reason emerged and took tolls on the peoples beliefs. Thinkers such as Ben Franklin noted that the government was more of Like a business and man-made sort of structure. This was a very a radical idea which went against the prevailing way of running countries through a monarchy. Once people conceived of a government as an artificial, then it became much less sacred and much more susceptible to criticism and even overthrow. In short, the colonies developed a more egalitarian society than Europe. Gordon Wood has said, Although eighteenth century society was much tighter and less permeable than American mythology would have It, the topmost ranks of the social hierarchy certainly remained more permeable and open to entry from below than In the mother country. The rank of gentleman in America was 118).America was the place where someone born into a low-class or in poverty could still work his way up the social adder and make a name for him or herself. Leaders of the American Revolution can be best labeled and defined as conservatives because of the traditional way they lead their country and people. However during this time of a struggle for freedom and independence there were obvious disagreements over such ways to run the people or to collaborate. However, during the Revolution the most influential and important leaders did not lead by violent protests but rallied the colonists through patriotic speeches.Leaders and decision-makers collaborated and met to discuss the Issues h at colonial America must face. The result of these gatherings and formulation of new Ideas such as liberty, Independence, and freedom lead to the whole radical movement to what we know as the Revolution. These leaders helped to Implement a constitution of the colonists desires in America, which ultimately resulted in The Revolution brought together America and its people. People with completely different views came together to reach the common goal everyone shared which was to gain independence from Britain. The movement itself went completely against all forms that had been in place for so many years. The people realized that they had had enough with British Rule and thus devised a declaration of their own independence as a Constitution that would lay out Americans rights and liberties. Because the British were unwilling to give these rights, the Revolution became extremely radical. However, the most radical moment was actually after the Revolution was completed and the British had lost. At that moment, the safest thing to do would have been to make their own monarchy.

In addition an organization has to develop an information system to meet the inter- and intra- organizational demand for information processing (Burton, Obel p. 10)The present organizational structure of Microsoft is a decentralized organization which is falling into professional bureaucracy and red tape. To make the organization effective, the structure should be matrix like with a functional base. While there is no need for centralizing the company, a little less formalization would be very beneficial for the internal environment. Being a very big organization automatically means that the company structure is complicated enough. Hence, efforts should be made for more effective communication by cutting of channels (Burton, Obel p. 290-293)Microsoft needs to continue its strategy of building strategic partners across the globe. Increasing the size of its own company should be taken one step at a time, so as to give the management as well as its employees to adjust to the various necessary changes. Forging alliances would make sure that the company stays within the competition and not much of the company structure is disturbed, which is seen to be a very common activity in the co mpany (Menzefricke p. 5). The strategic alliances should be with companies in the newer countries who could act as distribution centers. The company should also start actively foraying in the mobile and handheld device market by actively forging alliances. The focus here should be on product innovation for bringing out quality products, instead of just consolidating the market. This would enable the company in getting quality products which can then be aggressively marketed.Identify the key performance indicators to measure the performanceKey Performance Indicators are used for measuring the performance of each of the defined objectives. Using this, a process can be analyzed based on cause and effect, which can be used to implement strategies having built-in metrics to track and measure the performance.Based on the goals and objectives of Microsoft, its KPIs can be figured out. As the company wishes to grow throughout the world one of the KPI could be market growth. This can be furt her detailed by taking the market growth for each country group or each country. The rate of increase in the market share is yet another KPI, as are the sales or revenue growth rates. Hence, the company should take the sales target combined with the market share and make an analysis of the newer markets entered in a fiscal year to measure its true performance rating. As improving the quality of customer support is also an objective, one of the KPIs could be also be higher rate of customer satisfaction achieved in a given period. This can also be further divided into the percentage of returning customers, response time taken on an average, customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction indices etc. (Woods, Joyce p. 99)Establish the information requirements and hence strategic information systems to give a competitive edge to the companyThe world of business has always been ruled by information. With the advent of digital techniques the technology has advanced at a very fast rate. This as e ffected the way in which information is passed between various channels in business. IT based information systems have become the order of the day. The integration of business with IT ensures many advantages for the company adopting the digital mode of communication (Dobrev p. 7, 9). The major impact is on the enhancement of products, its life cycle, reduction in management levels and ultimately reduction the cost. The company can effectively manage its internal environment and concentrate its external environment. As a company expands the business goals of the managers change. This brings about an increase in the complexity of tasks performed by the managers leading from a structured world to an adhoc unstructured one. Integrating IT with businesses helps in simplifying the process, hence providing for a more effective working environment (Galliers, Leidner p.1, 2)IT inherently depends on systems. While working with IT companies should not only focus on its competitors but should a lso take into consideration its various present and potential collaborators which whom a strategic alliance or partnership could be forged. A classic example is the alliance between Intel and Microsoft which gave both of them a massive increase in sales and revenues along with the lionââ¬â¢s share of the market (Shapiros, Varian p.10). As can be seen this gives a much needed competitive edge to the company intending to employ Strategic Information Systems within the organization.Discuss the ethical and social issues associated with usage of IS/IT in the organization. The emergence of IS/IT systems have brought about newer ways of passage of information and also newer rules to ensure that the information that is passed is authorized and correct. The major problem seen with the software industry is the piracy of the software packages. While many efforts are made to curb this yet the problem seems to lie wit users who do not think that it is a crime to use software without proper aut horizations. The other issue is social in nature. There is a complete profile available of most of the people in the developed people available on the internet. The security when breached causes a breach in the personal data which was heretofore known only to select few. Many people are not comfortable with this scenario and the growing number of internet crimes does not help the situation either.Microsoft faces both the types of issues within its organization. To tackle these issues an attempt should be made to create awareness among people about the nature of their faults related to the software field.Suggest how customer relations could be improved with the usage of strategic systemsCustomer relation is an important aspect for any business organization. In case of smaller business units, the relations are closer knit and personal. The customer-relation process is hence closely monitored and any mistakes are easily found and rectifies. Larger organizations have trouble in maintaini ng customer relations at the same level as the smaller businesses, and this problem increases proportional to the size of the project (Knox p. 9). For global organizations like Microsoft with a dominating presence in almost every country that uses computers and software, the problem is even more acute. Any system used for this purpose in addition to providing inputs for increasing customer satisfaction must also have the additional features of being integrated with the entire system and also have economy of scale. For maintaining the huge database of customers, 100 million of which are in US alone, Microsoft relies on high-end software tools and technology to manage the customer relations across the globe. With sophisticated tools like MS SQL Server 2000, the company can process up to 2 million customer records per day. For getting a comprehensive view of its vast client network Microsoft has designed and deployed data warehouse (Microsoft p. 2-3). This system is used to improve cust omer satisfaction and increase the customer loyalty. The tools can be used to keep in touch with each customer helping the company serve them better. The tool also helps all the units of the company serve their customers in a similar way. This is helpful as the company has a highly decentralized structure with as many as 60 subsidiaries with different niche databases and sizes. Also each customer can be a part of multiple databases, which helps in having a complete profile of the individual customer, helping the company to cater to each specific customer. Finally having a common tool also standardizes the entire system throughout the entire organization (Microsoft p. 6-14).

The Cartesian Coordinate System Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Cartesian Coordinate System - Research Paper Example The Cartesian Coordinate System does not merely point reference to the graphical means of finding link between variables, rather, it gives Mathematics the desired image of identity in visible shapes and forms by which a learner can gain appreciation of the course as an interesting field of study. The Cartesian Coordinate System Prior to the concept of a two-dimensional system, the discovery of a coordinate system with one dimension had already enabled demonstration of the relative magnitudes of numbers in a graphical manner and had even shown how a distance between two points in the number line may be represented by the magnitude of their differences. The overall advantage, however, of a one-dimensional coordinate system is limited and is unable to extend its applicability to the relation or dependence of two sets of numbers quite significant in the mathematical studies of corresponding values wherein a set constituted by an ordered pair of numbers may be held in association to another or a couple other sets in a planar system of coordinates (Vance, p. 75). Importance of the Cartesian Coordinate System In 1637 Rene Descartes, a French mathematician and philosopher, used the Rectangular Cartesian System of Coordinates or a method of associating points with numbers, and by doing so. , associated a curve with its equation. Great progress in mathematics and the application of mathematics in science followed after this unification of algebra and geometry (Smoller). By definition of the Cartesian product of two sets, the case of interest is X ? Y where X and Y are both the set of real numbers R is symbolically denoted R x R ? { (x, y) | x ? R and y ? R }. Each member of the set is an ordered pair (x, y) and through the Cartesian coordinate system, it is possible to set up an association between this set of all ordered pairs (x, y) of R x R and the set of all points in the plane. Hence, the two-dimensional coordinate system becomes important in relating a point in a plane and a pair of real numbers which may be constructed using two perpendicular straight lines, vertical and horizontal, commonly known as the coordinate axes. With the point of intersection being the origin O, one may establish on each line a one-dimensional system which bears the same unit of length f or both axes where, normally, the horizontal line refers to the x-axis or axis of the values of ââ¬Ëxââ¬â¢ or abscissa whereas the vertical line pertains to the y-axis along which lie the values of ââ¬Ëyââ¬â¢ called the ordinates. Once the axes are drawn, one can begin to plot a data of points (x, y) and in determining a point corresponding to an ordered pair of values, it helps to draw lines parallel to the axes through the point (x1, 0) on the x-axis and the point (0, y1) on the y-axis (Vance, 76). These lines intersect at a point P, a distance x1 from the y-axis (to the right or left, depending upon whether x1 is positive or negative) and a distance y1 from the x-axis (above or below, depending upon whether y1 is positive or negative). These distances can be called directed distances and the point P, determined by the ordered pair of values x1 and y1, is denoted by the ordered pair, expressed as (x1, y1), where x1 and y1 are called coordinates of P. The two coordinate axes divide the plane into four parts, called the first, second, third, and fourth quadrants. It is useful to verify that the coordinates of points located in the different quadrants have the signs shown in the table. Quadrants Abscissa Ordinate I + + II _ + III _ _ IV + _ Since every other point may be plotted on the xy-plane, the line or curve connecting the

History - Essay Example The insufficient labor supply in America should actually be solved by considering immigration for people with different skills from other places to foster technology and development. The immigration system in America involves state, labor and justice federal departments. The labor department certifies that the immigrantââ¬â¢s employment shall not be of negative effect to the working conditions, salaries and employment in America. The justice department implements the laws in regards to the immigrants in America. The state department is responsible for distribution of applications to people in search for employment in the US. This also involves administering the immigration law. After immigration, most immigrants seek naturalization, after working in the US for over five years. Over the years, many immigrants have been granted legal status, but recently barriers have been put because of the rising numbers of immigrants. The immigration controversy brings out the conflict between the desires for growth and that for stability. In both cases, the proponents and opponents have their arguments based on the cultural and economic aspects, or status. The recent increase in the number of immigrants is the main reason for the immigration controversy in America. The origins of immigrants also pay a major role in their behavior and this adds to the existing controversy. The massive increase in the immigrants is a threat to the English-speaking heritage, because of the numerous ethic groups changing the ethnic composition of the population. Immigration controversy has been agitated by people especially leaders, who view immigration as a threat to the American culture and the English language. Religion has also been one of the major issues addressed along with the anti-immigration forces. The economic impact caused by immigration is one of the arguments brought forward against immigration in

Culture of Dissent Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Culture of Dissent - Essay Example Muto Ichiyo is well known in Japan as a scholar of contemporary Japanese politics and society, and for his involvement in peace movements and peopleââ¬â¢s movements. He was a prominent member of the 1960s anti-Vietnam War movement.Ichigo begins his article, ââ¬Å"Asian Peace Movements and Empireâ⬠with a summary of events beginning in Oct. 2001 and the establishment of the Asian Peace Alliance. As part of that network, it was hoped to create a response to the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan that was representative of all Asian people. Ichigo goes into more detail about Asiaââ¬â¢s own problems: the nuclear confrontation between Indian and Pakistan, fundamentalist fighting in India, and human rights violations among others. But in analyzing the conference on Asian Peace he acknowledges that 40% of the discussion revolved around ââ¬Å"the American Warâ⬠, with the majority of participants concluding that the ensuing violence against civilians had nothing to do with the wis hes of the American populace, but was rather the imperialists justifying a global pacification scheme. He uses the term neoliberal globalization and states the war was integral to that process, and as a result, it ââ¬Å"wreaked havocâ⬠on the world. One of the most forceful voices in clarifying what all of these writers are saying is that of Arundhati Roy in ââ¬Å"The Algebra of Infinite Justiceâ⬠. Infinite Justice was originally the name for Operation Enduring Freedom until complaints were made by Muslims, who stated only Allah could mete out infinite justice.

Analysis of Performance of Registered Nurse
Analysis of Performance of Registered Nurse INTRODUCTION Critical reflection acts as the precursor for transformative learning, which takes place by altering the level of personal understandings and the behavior (Mezirow, 1990). Critical refection leads to improved learning, assessment and thinking with respect to the system and the society (Smith, 2011). Critical reflection enables an individual to look beyond the horizon and visualize the bigger picture and develop reasonable views about the situation so that the assessment can become easier. Critical reflection is taught in various professional fields, including the health care system. This concept is not just theoretical but requires practical applicability also. Theoretically there are three models for reflecting critically. The first is the Deweyââ¬â¢s model of reflective learning which advocates that knowledge can be obtained by relating the past and present experiences. This approach is referred to as the pragmatic approach. The second model is that of Habermasââ¬â¢, which ad vocates the critical theory behind this approach and demonstrates three areas of knowledge, namely, practical, technical and emancipator. The third and the last model is the Kolbââ¬â¢s model of reflexive learning (Patricia Lucas, 2012). The Australian Nursing Federationââ¬â¢s standards of competency for a nurse have identified r put forward three domains of better level competencies: adaptation of practice, conceptualization of practice and leading on with the practice (Australian Nursing Foundation, 2005). AIM AND OBJECTIVE The objective of this paper is to critically examine and reflect on my professional skills and performance as a registered nurse, in the domain of adaptation of practice. The paper discusses about the main concept of critical reflection and also the competencies in the aforesaid domain. This essay is written in first person, as it will help in better understanding of the critical competencies possessed by an individual. DESCRIPTION The initial period of working in any professional field is very difficult and tiring. When I started to work as a nurse, in the emergency, I used to work for 6 days a week. The timings were also very stringent, from 8.00 AM till 3.00 PM. The work load was much higher as compared to the task force available. The number of nurses was reduced considerably and the health staff was under continuous stress as they had to cater to so many patients. Another problem faced by the health staff was the duration of stay of the patients and the workload on the emergency section. In my country, general statistics show that patients stayed for minimum two days. With each nurse catering to 6-7 patients at one time, it is nearly impossible to pay adequate attention to each on simultaneously. Plus this increases the work load to a greater extent. Most of the nurses, who worked, just had a diploma in nursing, while I and two others had the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. This is what distinguished us. We had better theoretical as well as practical skills as compared to them. This plus point kind of added to the workload I had. I was made responsible for all the emergency situations and for looking after the patients who were brought in emergency conditions. One of the main procedures of emergency is suturing. Since suturing requires both practical as well as theoretical skills, I was the one who was given the task of suturing, assessing the wounds of the injured, examining any other damage like that to arteries or tendons or nerve fibers. The morning task was to review all the patients along with the doctors and then for the latter half of the day each nurse was assigned 6 to 7 patients to take care of. OVERVIEW OF CRITICAL REFLECTION Nursing literature frequently mentions about critical reflection but nowhere has this term been defined precisely (McBrien, 2007). Vaguely it has been mentioned as the process of analyzing practice through regulated self reflection (Crowe Oââ¬â¢Malley, 2006). Although everybody has the ability to think with a different perspective, the aim of critical reflection is to enhance knowledge and redefine our understanding about self, by increasing self awareness and self consciousness, thereby focusing on the outcomes of our actions (Forrest, 2008). There are too many scenarios in the health care system, where the nurses are exposed to unexplained judgments, interpretations and decisions. To relieve the stress burden from our shoulders, it is important to inculcate critical thinking in our lives. Yes, it is true, critical reflection will give fire to anxiety, conflict and also cause self doubting issues but it will, eventually, alter the professional practice in an affirmative way (Oâ â¬â¢Connor, 2008). The new energy within will help in challenging the beliefs and assumption, that already exist and lead to better understanding of the things and thereby bringing about a change for benefit of all. Because of the increase in expectation from the nurses, they face complex demands, change and higher accountability. To comply with such situations, they need to develop skills of thinking on a higher level and improvement in the reasoning abilities (Crowe Oââ¬â¢Malley, 2006). SchÃâà §n (1983) has put forward two major reflections: reflection in action (which occurs when the action is being performed and is a result of thinking critically) and reflection on action (which is reflected after the action has been performed). Reflection in action involves many skills like being a good observer in every situation and trying to learn something out of every situation, interpreting, recording and understanding your feelings and responses to a certain situation and then inter relating your previous experiences, always make yourself counted in the experience via taking a ââ¬Ë witnessââ¬â¢ stance. On the other hand reflection on action is the most common form of reflection as what you have learnt or understood from your past encounters, all reflects in your future actions (David Somerville, 2004). Critical reflection is important for nurses because they need to incorporate change in their daily interaction, apply and update their professional skills, should develop self awareness and self directedness. They can successfully utilize the opportunities only if they ponder upon the feedback of their interactions and their impact on the patient, their families, colleagues and the health care unit as a whole. Therefore, critical reflection forms the most important ingredient for cooking the recipe of good conduct. DOMAIN OF INTEREST Day by day the complexities of the health care system are increasing. Thus, to meet the requirements various competency standards have been set up for registered nurses for advanced nursing. These competency standards aim to distinguish between the general and advanced nursing practices (Australian Nursing Federation, 2005; International Council of Nurses, 2010). The domain of interest here is the domain of ââ¬Ëadapting practiceââ¬â¢. It contains the competency abilities of advanced registered nurses to comply with and adjust or adapt to the challenging and more complex situations and still yield in better outcomes in terms of services offered (Australian Nursing Federation, 2005). The standards that are set, help in encouraging post graduate education for development in the field of advanced nursing practices and also enable each individual to individually critically analyze their competency in different domains (McGee, 2009). Like every other domain, the domain of adapting pr actice also stresses on understanding and meeting the needs and requirements of the patients who are suffering from complex and critical conditions (competency standard 4). This domain also states that improvement in the predicted outcomes should be made by referring to the past experiences and gathering information from other sources as well (competency standard 6) (Australian Nursing Federation, 2005). This essay also reflects upon the competencies of a registered nurse and the abilities that were utilized during complex and stressful situations. FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS Adaptation to a new environment is extremely difficult and it takes lots of patience and practice to adapt comfortably. I face many challenges in my workplace and earlier found it difficult to adapt. I also felt embarrassed when I needed help and could not ask anybody, fearing that my reputation would go down and that my fellow colleagues would make fun of me. Being equipped with the interpersonal skills, theoretical as well as practical knowledge about taking care of the patients and delivering the best quality of service, enabled me to climb up the ladder of success. Even though earlier it was difficult for me to interact with my fellow colleagues, now I can converse comfortably with anyone including my colleagues, patient, families and other staff members. Most of this was the result of feedback which I received from the patients, who generally praised my ability to empathize with the patients and then cater to their needs. As quoted above, feedback is an essential component for c ritical reflection, the positive feedback that I received from the consumers and my fellow staff members helped me visualize things with a different approach. I started enjoying my work. There were situations when I feared the outcome of some medical action. In my country, there are no rules and regulations pertaining to the safety of the health care professionals. This causes safety issues with the carers. Even I found myself in such situation when the medical practices could not save the life of the patient and his family members were outrageous, blaming the hospital for their loss, intending to burn down the entire building and take revenge. But then one should not be afraid of shadows, as shadows mean there is light somewhere near. There is an instance that reminds me of my good work and better performance as a nurse. I once cared for a boy who had been stabbed in the abdomen. There was profuse bleeding and I had taken every possible measure to stop the blood flow and restore th e consciousness of the boy. Three weeks later, that same boy came with his parents and thanked me for saving his life. Such precious compliments and gratitudeââ¬â¢s count a lot in the long run. EVALUATION I realized that during my performance in the hospital, as a registered nurse, I had some positive as well as negative traits. Good command over English language was counted among my positive traits. This enabled me to quickly read and understand the nursing articles written in English. Also since I could understand and associate what was mentioned, I was able to deliver effective care to the patients. Also my expertise in the fields of pathophysiology and emergency skills made me an important person in the hospital. Whenever there was a case of any emergency, I was made responsible to monitor the patient and do the needful. On the contrary, the nurses who lacked the knowledge about emergency skills or were not fluent in English language missed the opportunity. Ching Ying Lee (1998) has reported that nursing practice requires knowledge of proficient English as the nurses should be capable of using medical terms in fluent English. English is the most common language spoken worldwide and therefore, such a language should be known by all in order to address the cross cultural barriers in health care. Not only English is a common language but it has been named as the scientific language worldwide. Therefore, it is essential that all the communications pertaining to the medical condition of the patient, the health care outcomes and the treatment be explained in English to the patient as well as the concerned members (Mylaeus Renggli MI 1998). Another positive point that added to my portfolio was the good interpersonal and communication skills. With these skills I was able to interact efficiently with the staff and the patients as well. In order to deliver better services I followed the rule of empathy. Whenever any new patient was put under my care, I listened to him/ her and tried to picture myself in her/ his situation, so that I can understand better about the current situation of the patient and accordingly provide the guidelines to the family and the other medical staff. Most frequently we were faced with situations in which the burden on the health care unit was so much that all the patients were not being given equal attention, due to lack of task force and increased number of patients. In such cases one or the other patient or the family member would stand and start shouting in anger. I helped in controlling many such situations by calmly making the individual understand our plight and thereby promising him that I will take care of his/ her family member as soon as I get free. I utilized my good communication skills to deal with such patients. It is very important to have good communication skills in order to build trust between the patient and the doctor. It will consequently allow or enable the patient to disclose the information which might prove fruitful. Good communication also motivates the patient to get involved in the decisions related to health care, minimizes the risk of mishaps and errors and eventually enhances the satisfaction level of the patient (NHMRC, 2004). Literature has also shown the importance of understanding the cultural beliefs of the patients and making more accurate and meaningful decisions that are appreciated by the patient and the family both (Lawrence Dyche, 2007). Another important learning from my experience was that knowledge is never enough. Even after being a Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree holder, I found myself lagging behind in the field of pharmacology. Thus, it became the need of the hour for me to undergo a special three months training in this field and then I was all set and comfortable in explaining the patients about different drugs and their prescriptions. Although it is not advisable for the nurses to get into doctorââ¬â¢s role and prescribe drugs t the patients but they should know what different drugs are meant for, so that if the patient has a query related to which drug is administered to him or why it is administered, they should be able to answer them with confidence (Clare Lomas, 2010). One of the negative traits that I discovered within myself was not being able to extract the medical history of the patient. Emergency nurses should possess the skills of physical assessment as well as health history. This lag can be attributed to the overburden and work overload during the emergency situations. Another reason can be the demand for nurses as there had been shortage of nurses since of long time in my hospital. Joann Griff Alspach (2011) has laid forward the importance of knowing the medical history of the patient as well as of his family. This is important because a track record of all the details about the illness that have been occurring in the family can help in predicting the prognosis of the current state of the patient. Also prior information can help the doctors determine the allergies the patient possesses when subjected to certain chemicals or drugs. Another negative quality that I possessed was lack of team spirit. Whenever I had many patients and was overloaded with work, even though I wanted someone to help me, yet I never asked for help. I am now able to realize that team work is essential for efficient working of the team as it enables us to learn something new and benefit from each of the members involved. ANALYSIS My experience, expectations, feedback and results have majorly influenced the knowledge I have gained so far. My skills like being able to communicate proficiently in English and being able to understand the text presented in medical journals, which are generally written in English, has helped me gain recognition and my work has been appreciated by the authorities as well. Communication is an important aspect of health care as it promotes commonality of understanding and meaning (Sonia Allen, 2007). Also my skills like the knowledge of pathophysiology and dealing with patients during emergency situations helped me get positive response from the patients and their family members. Though there are certain negative aspects also, like lack of team spirit and lack of ability to get medical history out from the patient, yet I am happy that I am now able to analyze my performance as a whole and can work in the field of teamwork and improve my traits further. SYNTHESIS RECOMMENDATION FOR FUTURE PRACTICE I feel that I have precisely highlighted all my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats pertaining to the nursing practices. According to the standards for practice specified by the Nursing Council, the very first principle to e followed if to respect the individuality and dignity of all the health consumers. Treating with respect means interacting with the consumers in a polite and considerate manner, thereby helping them cope with their deteriorated condition and enable quick recovery. It is important to understand the cultural needs as well and decide upon the course of treatment accordingly. All the registered nurses are expected to work in partnerships as this enhances the working capability and also builds trust among the members of the staff, leaving no scope of discrimination. Another perception of working in partnerships can be with respect to the health consumers. It is important to listen to them, respond to their concerns and acknowledge their preferences as well . It is not necessary to give affirmation to all their preferences but only to those which are practicable. Also, it the responsibility of the nurse to encourage and motivate the consumers by providing them relevant and complete information about their condition, so that they can make decisions independently. Another point to be kept in mind is to respect and allow patientââ¬â¢s privacy and confidentiality. The code of conduct should comprise of integrity so that the consumerââ¬â¢s trust can be justified. Integrity means consistency in the principles and ethics that you follow and not abusing the position held by you or the trust of the authorities. Lastly, all the registered nurses must maintain public confidence and trust in their profession and also maintain the ethics involved (Nursing Counsil, 2011). CONCLUSION The aim of this essay was to provide a detailed outline of the analysis of the performance of a registered nurse, when working in the domain of adapting practice. The basic concept of critical reflection and how it modifies the outlook or the perception has been well explained with the help of live examples.

New Product Development Process Essay
For every successful new product, many new product ideas are conceived and discarded. Therefore, companies usually generate a large number of ideas from which successful new products emerge. I work as a strategic manager in Solarland Co., Ltd. This company does business of electronic appliances. As a Strategic Manager, I have been directed by my BOD to introduce a new product in Bangladesh. I want to introduce a Solar Based LED TV which will be run with solar system, which is without electricity people will be able to watch TV. So I have gone through my knowledge which I gained from my Strategic Management course and then make a draft of my proposal for them. The draft of my proposal for introducing a new solar based LED TV is discussed below. 1. Idea Generation The new product development process begins with idea generation. Strategic management is all about selling an idea. So as a Strategic manager I have created the new product idea of Solar Based LED TV. I have created this idea as I want to capture a new market where people do not have enough electricity or else they will also be able to safe electricity cost. This new product can define the overall character and mission of our company. 2. Idea Screening Idea screening, the second step, considers the new product idea of developing a Solar Based LED TV. At this stage I consider not only the firmââ¬â¢s manufacturing, technology, and marketing capabilities, but also how the new idea fits with the companyââ¬â¢s vision and strategic objectives. During screening the idea I consider some facets which are very important like: What are the purposes of the organization? What image should the organization project? What are the ideals and philosophies that the organization desires its members to posses? What is the organizations business? How can the organization best fulfill its corporate objectives? 3. Concept Development and Testing The third stage, concept development and testing, requires formal evaluations of the product concept by consumers, usually through some form of marketing research. As a strategic manager, to build up a self-concept is very important. Self-Concept refers to the distinctive competence or major competitive advantages of the company. In case of concept testing, the existing strategic plan should be compared with the best plan which can be developed at any given point in time. So the best conceivable plan becomes the standard. The degree to which the existing plan varies from the standard and the cost of that variation compared to the cost of revising the plan will determine whether corrective action should be taken. Figure 1: New Product Development Process and Strategic Factors 4. Business Analysis The business analysis stage is next. At this point the new product idea is analyzed for its marketability and costs. After passing the first three stages an idea may be discarded once marketing and manufacturing costs are analyzed, due to limited potential for profitability or commercial success. I can do it through Porter Five Forces analysis. Figure 2: Factors of Industry Analysis Threat of new entrants Profitable markets that yield high returns will attract new firms. This results in many new entrants, which eventually will decrease profitability for all firms in the industry. Unless the entry of new firms can be blocked by incumbents the abnormal profit rate will trend towards zero (perfect competition). So I will analyze the threat factor of new entrants. For my new product I found that potential threat of new entrants are very low. Threat of substitute products or services The existence of products outside of the realm of the common product boundaries increases the propensity of customers to switch to alternatives. So I need to assess whether there is any existing or potential substitute of our new product. As this new product will work without electricity, so threat of substitute product is very low. Bargaining power of customers (buyers) The bargaining power of customers is also described as the market of outputs: the ability of customers to put the firm under pressure, which also affects the customerââ¬â¢s sensitivity to price changes. The buyer power is high if the buyer has many alternatives. We can take measures to reduce buyer power, such as implementing a loyalty program. Bargaining power of suppliers The bargaining power of suppliers is also described as the market of inputs. Suppliers of raw materials, components, labor, and services to the firm can be a source of power over the firm when there are few substitutes. Suppliers may refuse to work with our firm or charge excessively high prices for unique resources. So we need to be careful about that. 5. Prototype Development The fifth stage, prototype development, at this stage the concept is converted into an actual product. A customer value perspective during this phase means the product is designed to satisfy the needs expressed by consumers. We may use quality function deployment (QFD) as we develop the prototype. QFD links specific consumer requirements such as versatility, durability, and low maintenance with specific product characteristics (for example, adjustable shelves, a door-mounted ice and water dispenser, and touch controls for a refrigerator). The customer value perspective requires the new product to satisfy customer needs and meet desired quality levels at specified production costs. 6. Test Marketing In Test marketing we will test the prototype and marketing strategy in simulated or actual market situations. Because of the expense and risks associated with actual test markets, we need to use them with caution. If the product tests poorly, it will be pulled back and re-conceptualized or discarded. 7. Commercialization Commercialization, the final stage, is when the product is introduced fullà scale. The level of investment and risk are highest at this stage. At this stage we will consider consumer adoption rates, timing decisions for introduction, and coordinating efforts with production, distribution, and marketing. STRATEGIC FACTORS INFLUENCING NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Organizational Structure and Culture Organizational structure, leadership, and team building influence the speed and efficiency with which new products are introduced. Structure influences efficiency, autonomy, and coordination. New product innovation requires structure that optimizes direction and guidance. Structure that facilitates internal information exchange, decision making, and materials flow is essential. A ââ¬Å"fast-cycleâ⬠structure allows more time for planning and implementing activities to gain competitive advantage. This type of structure also cuts costs because production materials and information collect less overhead and do not accumulate as work-in-process inventory. Autonomy refers to the amount of decision making allowed at lower levels of management. The coordination of the engineering, product designs, manufacturing, and marketing functions in the new product development process is vital. Leadership Leadership influences strategy, culture, and the firmââ¬â¢s overall ability to undertake new product development. Top management can demonstrate involvement in the development process by providing career advancement for entrepreneurial skills and encouraging broad employee participation. Clarity and vision are crucial to ensuring that new product ideas are good strategic fits for the company. The degree to which leadership allows trial and error and promotes individual initiative positively influences the development of new products. This acceptance of risk and support for an entrepreneurial spirit within the organization are crucial in order for innovation to flourish. New products emerge in a variety of ways and their development does not always proceed in rational and consistent manners. It is necessary for leadership to view the process as iterative and dynamic, and to foster adaptation and flexibility. Management flexibility and responsiveness toà change also are needed. This type of leadership is particularly important to the project manager who must coordinate and integrate the various parts of the new product development process so that a coherent system emerges that produces a product with compelling value. Initiative encourages creativity and problem-solving skills. Team Building Teams provide mechanisms for breaking down functional biases created by a strict adherence to structure. The amount of interdepartmental conflict in the organization, the social cohesion among team members, and the frequency and directionality of interdepartmental communication influence team building. Through shared understanding of the objectives and purposes of the project, as well as the tasks required in the development process, teams can shape the project and influence how work gets done in the organization. Now a day technology continues to change and create new opportunities and threats. Customer requirements and expectations continue to shift and create new demands. Old channels of distribution are becoming obsolete and new channels are opening new opportunities. Some competitors are falling by the wayside while others are surging to the forefront by making new and unexpected moves to gain advantage. The very structure of industry is changing. A key to success in this tumultuous environment will continue to be the ability to sustain a competitive advantage through innovation. However, speed, efficiency, and quality in product development will be paramount. Building capabilities in all aspects of product creation and implementation, overcoming uncertainty and facilitating decision-making, ensuring these innovations are strategically linked to the firmââ¬â¢s vision, and doing this on a continuous basis is the challenge of new product development in the next century.

Roman Achievements essays
Roman Achievements essays Where would the world be today without the founding of the Roman Household and the idea of paterfamilias, advances in science and medicine, and the many changes in Christianity and marriage practices? It is hard to imagine what our society would be like without a head of the household, medicine for illness, science for technology, and Christianity along with marriage practices. The Romans made many advances in science and medicine. Archimedes of Syracuse founded the formulas of spheres and cylinders, the actual number of pi which is used mostly for a circles circumference, as well as other discoveries in astronomy and engineering (Osheim and Roberts 138). Archimedes also invented the water snail which was a screw like device to raise water for irrigation...which made it possible to irrigate previously barren land (Osheim and Roberts 138). The idea of astronomy first came from advances in mathematics (Osheim and Roberts 138). The Romans used to believe that the sun revolved around the earth, when in 275 B.C., Aristarchus of Samos made the hypothesis that the earth really revolves around the sun, and then in 135 B.C., Hipparchus of Nicaea proved this hypothesis correct (Osheim and Roberts 138). Many other medical advances were made around this time, such as cross-fertilization and the first dissection of a human. The scientists would practice dissecting on criminals that were condemned to death (Osheim and Roberts 138). One of the leading scientific beneficiaries was Herophilus of Chalcedon, a practicing physician in Alexandria, for he found that the brain was the center of the nervous system, as well as the first dissection of the human, and the discovery of the ovaries (Osheim and Roberts 139). Scientific discoveries helped the army with technology. They were able to build engines and bombs for war, ways of transportation, and many other industrial wonders. ...

Thorny Devil Lizard Facts
Thorny Devil Lizard Facts Thorny devil lizards are part of class Reptilia and mainly live throughout the arid parts of Australia. Their scientific name, Moloch horridus, is derived from the Latin word meaning rough/bristly (horridus). These lizards get their name from the conical spikes across their whole body, and they can camouflage themselves in their environments. Fast Facts: Thorny Devil Lizards Scientific Name: Moloch horridusCommon Names: Thorny Devil, Mountain DevilOrder: SquamataBasic Animal Group: ReptileDistinguishing Characteristics: Conical spikes on its head, body, and tail with a skin color of yellow and brownish-black.Size: Up to 8 inchesWeight: 0.1 - 0.2 pounds on averageLife Span: Up to 20 yearsDiet: AntsHabitat: Dry desert, grasslands, scrublandConservation Status: Least ConcernFun Fact: Per meal, a thorny devil can eat anywhere from 600 to 2,500 ants with their sticky tongues. Description Thorny devils have cones and shields on their bodies that serve as camouflage and as retainers of any water they come in contact with. The colors of their skin range from brown to yellow as the time of day changes to effectively blend in with their arid environments. They have long tongues that allow them to catch ants, and their teeth are specially adapted to bite through the hard, chitin-rich bodies of ants. Females are generally larger than males, and they live 6 to 20 years in the wild. Head of a Thorny Devil Lizard. Theo Allofs / Getty Images These reptiles do not travel very far from their homes. They are not territorial and have been spotted in overlapping ranges of other thorny devils. They are also active from March through May and August through December. During the hottest (January and February) and coldest parts (June and July) of the year, thorny devils hide in burrows that they dig. Habitat and Distribution Thorny devils live in most of the arid regions of Australia, including the Southern and Western parts of the country. They prefer desert areas and spinifex grasslands. Spinifex is a type of spiky grass that grows in sand dunes. Diet and Behavior Their diet is made up exclusively of ants, eating anywhere from 600 to 2,500 ants in one meal. They locate these ants by moving very slowly to find trails and then waiting for the ants to come. They use their sticky tongues, similar to an anteaters, to pick them up. Additionally, thorny devilsââ¬â¢ skin collects water from its environment and channels the liquid to its mouth to drink. In extreme circumstances, they bury themselves in the sand to get moisture from it. Thorny Devil traveling on the sand. Luis Castaneda Inc. / Getty Images Thorny devils are non-territorial and donââ¬â¢t travel very far from their homes. Their daily routine consists of leaving their cover in the morning to warm themselves in the sand, moving to their defecation site, and then returning to their cover along the same path while eating ants along the way. However, they will travel further distances between August and September when in search of mates. To defend against predators, such as buzzards and Australian bustards (large land birds), thorny devils curl themselves to protect their head and expose a bony mass on their neck often referred to as a false head. This fools predators into attacking the knob instead of its real head. Reproduction and Offspring Mating season for thorny devils occurs from August to December. They travel long distances to converge at mating sites. Males attempt to attract females by bobbing their heads and waving their legs. Females fall and roll to throw off any males that meet their disapproval. Females lay 3 to 10 eggs in burrows much deeper than their normal ones and fill in the holes to cover up any signs of the burrow. The eggs incubate anywhere from 90 to 132 days and then the young emerge. Males and females grow at similar rates for the first year, but females grow at faster rates up until age five. Conservation Status Thorny devils are designated as least concern as assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The organization found thorny devils to be very widespread and unlikely to be under any threat. Sources Dewey, Tanya. Moloch Horridus. Freedom of Choice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Freedom of Choice - Essay Example In some stories, the choices are more obvious than others. Updikeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A & Pâ⬠focuses entirely on the events leading up to Sammyââ¬â¢s life-changing decision. Although he does say, ââ¬Å"it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it's fatal not to go through with itâ⬠(Updike 18), his original decision was based on his own personal worldview, in his appreciation of beauty. Although Sammy only makes a single choice in this short story, it is the choice that feels right to him. His manager even tries to persuade him to take another path, but Sammy refuses. In fact, in this case, to recant his decision would be to allow someone else to choose his fate. Although he knows his choices will make life hard, he deliberately chooses not the path that will make things hard, but the path that will ensure he does not turn into the storyââ¬â¢s final image: Lengel, ââ¬Å"His faceâ⬠¦dark gray and his back stiff, as if he'd just had an injection of ironâ⬠(Upd ike 19). Sammy is choosing his own freedom, along with all its attendant difficulties. Steinbeckââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Chrysanthemumsâ⬠paints a picture of a thirty-five year old woman who might seem somewhat trapped in her own life. However, the story shows that Elisa is still a strong woman who can make choices for herself. Although she says of the life of a tinker in a wooden caravan, ââ¬Å"It must be very nice. I wish women could do such thingsâ⬠(Steinbeck 258), she knows that she can do anything the visitor can do. Further, she has the power of her magic ââ¬Å"plantersââ¬â¢ handsâ⬠.

Nursing Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Nursing - Case Study Example Similarly, the individual level performances of the organizational members are satisfactory enough as the employees are happy and satisfied with their jobs. They do not find any hardship during the course of action in completing their tasks. Every employee is happy and satisfied with his/her job. Employees do have decent relationship among each other. All these employees do respect each other. They do share things with each other including work related information. They also assist each other in completing their tasks. In trouble times, they get together and work on ideas and strategies to get out of those troubles. They have good communication mechanism among each other. The orders and instructions of Joe, the president, are highly respected and taken care of, in a good faith. His instructions are obeyed. The leadership skills shown by Joe are also pretty much acceptable to the subordinated working under him. He is respected, and he respects others too. He gives chances to the subor dinates to have their say. He gives and instructions and in response, he is reported by the subordinates. Group Level ââ¬â No Signs at all Besides all these good things happening in the metric division, yet there is some serious lacking that can be observed quite easily. This is lack of groups and teams working in the division. There are no signs of groups or teams working together. There finds no image of project based teams. What really missing in this division is the group level that is not found anywhere in the organizational system. Overall, it looks as if every person works for himself and the organization, nobody is interested in working under a team. Teams do have their advantages and disadvantages, but their advantages are far more than their side effects. Teams normally work under a leader on certain projects within specified deadlines. They have a formal goal to achieve. That goal gives team members a sense of motivation, identity and a charm to work more and good for themselves, for their teams and ultimately for the organization. The team structure provides the synergy effect such that the efforts of all individuals working under a team are magnified to produce a better resultant in the end. More brains give more ideas and techniques of performing the tasks in a more efficient way. Thus, under the leadership of a sensible individual, team workings can bring advantages to the organization. Feedback The feedback method that should be used in this case is one on one Interview with each employee. The problem which is arising in this organization is that they are good in working at individual level and organizational level but while working as a team, there are numerous problems which they experience. They face problems especially in Group Functioning. It is essential for every organization to have such group members which coordinate and cooperate while working in teams. But in this case, coordination and willingness of participation is lacking. Af ter doing one on one interview, it is essential to take a group interview as well. In group interview, a specific number of team members must be allocated and a group discussion should be commenced in order to find what problems are arising while working as a team. At the end of the discussion, there are chances of reaching to a particular conclusion and

The Guardian Building, Detroit, Michigan Research Paper
The Guardian Building, Detroit, Michigan - Research Paper Example Detroit is credited with the best paintings and the best painters like Graham Beal, Julie Mehretu and Jane Hammond. In Detroit, the Detroit Institute of Arts also has a wide collection of paintings which hail from all corners of the world consequently making Detroit an art attraction city. It is reported that Detroit owns more than 100 art galleries which showcase the talent and creativity of the people of Detroit (Uhr, 4). Painting being is one of the major aspects of art that has been vividly exploited by the people of Detroit. Due to this, this paper will explain the recent and old art of Detroit with a main focus on paintings around its metropolitan area. Paintings in Detroit The Detroit area hosts a wide range of paintings safely kept in galleries, museums, schools and famous buildings with some of the oldest and famous painters credited for the beautiful works. One of the oldest painters in Detroit was Diego Rivera who painted twenty seven wall paintings. His paintings featured the traditional Mexican culture which resembles the indigenous Indian culture (Scripps, 54). It is evident that art was used to express the heritage and culture of a people. Moreover, Diego Riveraââ¬â¢s work also included wall paintings or murals of the Ford Company at the start of making of the fuel propelled engine (Scripps, 147). He painted workers at the industry working with big machinery inside the Ford Company making the engines. This was a great monument which until today holds the memory of the beginning of the petrol engine designing. On the walls, Rivera painted murals with varied expressions from the cultural traditions of the Mexican people to the industrialism if the American nation (Scripps, 97). They were considered his greatest success which depicted the industrial and technological revolutions that were taking place around the nineteenth century. It is also evident that painting as art also stores the memories and events that were take place at a certain time I n addition, Thomas Cole in 1845 and 1847 painted one of the most extraordinary pieces of the view of lakes and peaks at sunset (Richardson, 57). This was a great painting which attracted attention from the greatest collectors in Detroit. It was finally stored in the Schwartz Galleries among other paintings done by Thomas Cole. In his paintings, Thomas Cole expressed nature at different views clearly exploring the diverse natural attractions of Detroit. This explains that art is also used in the expression of certain natural phenomena. This led to increased tourist visitations and further enhancing the art of the Detroit people (Downs, Rivera & Kahlo, 57). Other inspiring and talented painters have also hailed from Detroit. Particularly, Patricia Hill Burnett (Siler) a lady who was born in Brooklyn moved to Detroit with her mother and started professional portrait painting (Beal, 21). She is credited with some famous paintings including the painting of the Philippines President Coraz on Aquino in her presidential palace in Manila, the portraits of Margaret Thatcher, Max Fisher, Jackie Joyner Kersee and Indira Gandhi. Another artist who was very talented is Shelden Iden, who is credited with beautiful works of himself, and the inspiring paintings of the great Indian caves using the light rays that were streaming through the cave openings.
